Biography

Stefan König is a professor at the Department of Sport Science of the University of Education in Weingarten (Germany). He has expertise in sport pedagogy, exercise science, research methodology, and games teaching. From 1978 to 1984 he studied sport science and English at the University of Tubingen and received his PhD from the University of Tubingen in 1991. His dissertation thesis focused on convergent tactical decisions of competitive handball players. After some years of teaching at a German High School Stefan König worked at the Institute for Sport Science of the University of Tubingen as an academic director being responsible for various study courses. Since 2006 he has been a professor for Sport Science at the University of Education in Weingarten. In 2008 he was voted director of the university’s research center for secondary education. His main research interests are in instructional research focusing on exercise effects and motor learning, team sport and coaching performance, as well as in mixed methods research. He also is a reviewer for a range of international and national journals, member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Multimethod Research Approaches, and consultant for several sport associations and health insurance companies.

With respect to TGfU, Stefan König first came into contact with this approach during his years in Tübingen. Meanwhile he conducts workshops on TGfU for trainee and in-service teachers and was invited speaker at the 6. TGfU conference 2016 in Cologne. In 2021 he is already accepted with a presentation on teaching TGfU at the 7. TGfU conference in Worcester (UK). This lecture covers a current binational research project with the University of Education in Zurich focussing on preservice teachers in Switzerland and Germany. Some of his diverse publications deal with different issues of TGfU.

Mission Statement

As a member of TGfU SIG I intend to make German teachers more familiar with TGfU, a vision that will try to influence teacher education and Physical Education.  Additionally, it is my plan to integrate TGfU principles into the training conceptions of the German football, basketball, volleyball, and handball associations
