What's Happening in Japan

The New Course of Study

In Japan, the Courses of Study for elementary and junior high schools was revised in 2017, and the Courses of Study for high schools was revised in 2018. And from April 2020, the new course of study was launched in elementary and junior high schools. The course of study for high schools will be acted from April, 2021.

The new course of study emphasizes the importance of learning in symbiosis. In addition to the fun of playing sports, it also emphasizes the fun of watching, supporting, and knowing. In the field of health, the focus is not only on knowledge, but also on skills that can be used in actual situation.

The contents of the games have been strongly influenced by TGfU: in the 2008 revision of the course of study, the names of specific sports were even removed from the content, and the content included Invasion Game, Net/Wall Game and Striking/Fielding Game. Since then, the idea of GBA is becoming popular. It seems that this idea have been emphasized more in the 2017 curriculum guidelines.

In addition, it introduces the similarities and differences between the various GBA teaching strategies, including TGfU, Tactical Games Model, Game Sense, Play Practice, and Game Concept Approach.
