40th Anniversary

We are excited to announce that 2022 is the 40th anniversary of the publication of the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model. Throughout the year, we celebrated the field of game-based approaches with a variety of events and initiatives.

Thanks to the support and engagement of our community, these events were a resounding success.

Our Events/Initiatives

Monthly Guest Blogs

Throughout 2022, we continued with our monthly guest blogs written by members of our community. These cover a wide range of topics within game-based approaches.

If you are interested in writing for our monthly guest blogs please contact Ellen at [email protected]

Special Blogs and Resources

Each month we showcased different models/approaches with the game-based approaches field. We discussed the models, developments in their field and future directions. We also aimed to create some practical resources for you to use (where we could).

Further special blogs will be created in 2023 to cover as many of the models/approaches as we can. Apologies for the delays in the writing of these.

40th Anniversary Conference

To conclude our anniversary year, we are hosting an online conference with keynote speakers, theme room discussions and a roundtable discussion with a panel of GBA experts. We also have on demand sessions where members of our community can present their work. For full details click here

NTG Event

In partnership with our colleagues in the Netherlands, the Network Teaching Games (NTG) organised a symposium ‘Game-Based Approaches Globally’ on the 8th of April 2022. After an opening keynote from the TGfU SIG chair elect, Jeroen Koekoek, we travelled around the world digitally with our participants and provided them with inspiring insights into the different GBA models/philosophies across the Globe.

"Teaching Games and Sport for Understanding" Edited Book

Edited By Shane Pill, Ellen-Alyssa Gambles and Linda Griffin (2023)

This new book brings together leading and innovative thinkers in the field of teaching and sport coaching pedagogy to provide a range of perspectives on teaching games and sport for understanding. Teaching Games and Sport for Understanding engages undergraduate and postgraduate students in physical education and sport coaching, practicing teachers, practicing sport coaches, teacher educators and coach developers. The contributions, taken together or individually, provide insight, learning and opportunities to foster game-based teaching and coaching ideas, and provide conceptual and methodological clarity where a sense of pedagogical confusion may exist.
